Report Editing

Reports should begin with a focus on a planned outcome — not simply on the information they need to contain.

Before I begin editing a report, I want to understand what it is designed to achieve — and who needs to read it for that outcome to happen. That purpose shapes the way I assess the structure, argument, evidence, emphasis and language of the document.

A report can be accurate, well researched and grammatically sound, yet still fail to produce the response its author is seeking. My approach to report editing is therefore not simply to improve the words, but to consider whether the document as a whole is communicating what it needs to communicate to the people whose response matters.

Editing with the outcome in view

Once the purpose and the people whose response matters are identified, I review the report from their perspective. Does the structure lead them through the argument? Is the evidence given the right weight? Are the strongest points sufficiently prominent? Is anything obscuring, weakening or distracting from the case being made?

This allows the editing to go beyond correcting language. Depending on the level of support required, I may recommend changes to structure, sequence, emphasis, clarity and presentation — always with the report’s planned outcome in mind.

Reports I can help with

I provide proofreading and editorial support for substantial reports and policy-facing documents from organisations, researchers, consultants and other professionals.

  • Policy and research reports

  • Consultation and evaluation reports

  • Briefing and position papers

  • Evidence-based submissions

  • Organisational and impact reports

  • White papers and professional publications

If your document does not fit neatly into one of these categories, get in touch. The important question is not what the document is called, but what it needs to communicate and achieve.

Experience behind the editing

My approach draws on experience in local government, public affairs, policy-facing work and substantial editorial projects. I have worked with documents where clarity is not simply a matter of style: the way evidence, argument and recommendations are communicated can affect how the document is understood and acted upon.

My work has included the detailed editorial review of a substantial parliamentary report, involving close attention to structure, evidence, argument, consistency and presentation across the document as a whole.

Report Editing Pricing

Report editing pricing by document length and level of editorial support

Level 1 covers proofreading and focused review, while Levels 2 and 3 provide progressively more substantial editorial support. The level is determined by the intervention required, not simply by document length.

Length determines the applicable price band, but content, complexity, purpose and the extent of editorial intervention determine where within that band the quotation falls.
